How Smart Crop® Waxes work?

All fruits and vegetables produce some ethylene during their life cycle, most go bad because of damage caused by microorganisms such as bacteria and mold, enzymatic processes or bruising.

Enzymes, which occur naturally in live fruits and vegetables, are part of the natural aging process. The ethylene gas produced by fruits, speeds ripening decreasing their shelf life after a period of time. Further, the modes of transport used to make the fruits available to consumers from the place of produce add to damaging the fruits if not managed properly.

Waxes work by slowing down the breathing of the fruit and thereby limit the total ethylene generated by it. This in turn reduces the ripening rate and the fruit is able to remain fresh for a longer period of time. Waxes also slow down the rate of water loss and act as a barrier for water evaporation, this prevents shriveling of the outer skin and helps in reducing the overall weight loss during transportation or storage.
